GROUNDWATER REMEDIATION RELEVANT EXPERIENCE

ENSOURCE personnel have extensive experience at various landfill locations around the country (including sanitary, industrial and hazardous waste facilities).  Groundwater issues at these types of facilities are often extremely complex due to the highly variable nature and variety of contaminates present.

REPRESENTATIVE PROJECTS

Cogeneration Facility, Texas City, Texas – Provided design, installation and O&M of a natural gas condensate groundwater recovery system resulting from a natural gas condensate tank overfill.

Natural Gas Pipeline Rupture Site, Easton, Texas – Operated an in situ air stripping remediation system for a four (4) acre lake contaminated with run off after a catastrophic rupture of an eight (8) inch natural gas pipeline.  The project also involved the collection and analysis of post incident and post treatment samples at the lake and downstream to the Sabine River.

Natural Gas Pipeline, McAllen, Texas – Performed installation of monitor well and soil borings at multi locations in support of litigation defense.  Provided radioactive isotope analysis to assist with the differentiation of “shallow contaminated groundwater” from formation depth brines and condensates.

Oil Refinery (closed), Latonia, KY- Conducted field investigation of oil sheen on Banklick Creek.  Immediate control of petroleum product included booms and diapers on surface of creek.  Field investigation revealed location of varnoline product in subsurface.  Design included an interceptor trench along Banklick Creek to collect petroleum product.

Chemical Cleaning Facility, Pedricktown, NJ – Investigated extent of ground water contamination at a chemical cleaning facility.  Contaminants included volatile organics and inorganics.  Remediation included source removal from onsite storage basin and pumping of ground water.  Collected ground water was sent to an off site treatment facility.

RCRA Hazardous Waste Facility, Calcasieau Parish, La. – Investigated the effect of the addition of low concentrations of different salts of ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) to the feedstream of a hazardous waste underground injection well.  It was determined that the EDTA inhibited the formation of insoluble solids at downhole temperatures and pressures, thus maintaining the porosity and the capacity of the injection formation.

RCRA Hazardous Waste Facility, Lake Charles, LA – Provided technical support to site investigation and remediation of hazardous waste lagoons and impact to shallow ground water.  Remediation included stabilization and removal of liquid wastes to secure landfill, delineation of impacted ground water, and pump and treat removal system.

RCRA Hazardous Waste Facility, Livingston, LA – Provided technical support for field investigation of old unlined disposal cells.  Remediation included construction of a slurry wall around individual cells and a pump and treat system.

Railroad Yard, Galveston, Texas – Provided design, installation and O&M of a diesel fuel recovery system after a significant spill.  Work included working in an active railroad yard.

Abandoned Pesticide Manufacturer, Farmers Branch, Texas – Provided installation and startup of a groundwater removal, organic removal treatment and re-injection system.

Metal Scrap Processor, Houston, Texas – Designed, fabricated, installed and operated a polychlorinated bi-phenyl (PCB) removal system at a newly acquired scrap processor.  The contaminated water was discovered stagnant in abandoned sumps which were apparently historically used for storm water flow from the operation.

NPL Superfund List Landfill, Monroe Township, NJ – Managed post-closure activities of NPL Superfund site.  Remediation included a clay cap, interceptor trench for collection of leachate, piezometer installation to evaluate effectiveness of collection trench, and ground water monitor wells.  Responsibilities included conducting site investigation, oversight of consultant’s field and design work, interfacing with USEPA Region II and NJDEP, and preparation of progress work.

NPL Superfund List Landfill, South Brunswick, NJ – Managed post-closure activities of NPL Superfund site.

NPL Superfund List Landfill, Boulder, CO – Managed design of ground water collection wells/trench and treatment system for a landfill listed on the NPL Superfund list.  Responsibilities included oversight of consultant’s field and design work, interfacing with USEPA Region VIII and Colorado Department of Health, submission of progress reports, and capping of landfill.  Demonstrated that the best solution was a gas extraction system inside the landfill mass to mitigate migration of volatile organics.

Solid Waste Landfill, Sinton, TX – Managed field investigations to determine source of volatile organics in shallow ground water.  Remediation included installation of gas extraction wells in landfill, installation of two ground water extraction wells, and piezometers to evaluate effectiveness of capture zone.  Collected ground water was sent to local POTW for treatment.  In subsequent lawsuit, successfully showed through use of stable isotopes and tritium that landfill did not impact private residential wells.

Solid Waste Landfill, Amarillo, TX – Demonstrated that the source of a low level volatile organic in ground water was landfill gas.  Remediation included upgrade of landfill gas extraction system and installation of two ground water extraction wells.  Collected ground water was sent through a low profile air stripper for treatment.

Solid Waste Road Landfill, Houston, TX – Performed an investigation to determine source and extent of carbon tetrachloride found between landfill and local bayou.  Investigation included hydropunch drilling, surface geophysics, installation of monitor wells, design of a cutoff wall and interceptor trench, and monitoring of effectiveness of remediation system.
